An abundance of controversy erupted over the Engineer class from Guild Wars 2 when it was announced last full week. Some fans of the game also went so far as to wonder if the class even belongs in a fantasy sport. Thanks to ArenaNet’s Community Manager Regina Buenaobra, we’ve got answers to some of the losing questions the fans have had about this explosive class.
Guild Wars 2 is focused 250 years after the events from the original Guild Wars. “Technology has sophisticated a great deal, and we desired the engineer to personify this improvement. And frankly, we didn’t want to help feel constrained by typical conventions as to what is or is not acceptable within a fantasy story,” Buenaobra explains in this Engineer FAQ on the official website.
Now we know that the type fits with the timeline, but this doesn’t explain the other issue fans have got with this class. Why would this nature-loving Sylvari be interested within this type of technology? Buenaobra notes, “People in general are exceptional and strange figures, heroes who stand out amid their people. Just as there will be asura warriors and norn necromancers, it is not unheard of for an inquisitive, mechanically-inclined sylvari to become a good engineer.”
